Wanted: Curtain Pullers

When I was in third grade our class put on a play. I was a very shy child. I didn’t want any part of the play. The thought of getting on stage with the lights on me and everyone watching was not appealing at all. My teacher was a very compassionate teacher and recognized this. She offered me the job of the curtain puller. She described that at the just the right time I would have to open and close the curtain. My focus and timing was very important. She got down on my level and looked me in the eye and said, “Without you the show can’t go on.” I felt so proud, important, and needed. I remember my sister took the day off to come see the play. I had kept my special role in the play a secret.

The day came, I did my part, and at the end of the play I was the last person to be called out to be recognized. They save the most important role for last right? “The curtain puller- Julie Croskey”  I was thrilled. As I took my bow I thought how the audience had no idea that without me behind the scenes the show could not go on.  My sister of course felt differently. “I took the whole day off from work and I never saw you the whole play? Why didn’t you tell me this is what you were doing?” But even her comment couldn’t dull my sparkle. I believed in my job. I knew how important it was to be focused and behind the scenes. Though I wasn’t seen by anyone out in the audience, I knew the importance of the job the teacher had given me. Years later when I began to pray in intercession for others God brought this curtain pulling memory back to mind. We are called to be curtain pullers for God’s kingdom. Prayer changes everything. The teacher tells us exactly when to pull the curtain and we patiently pull the curtain in prayer and watch as God performs healings, miracles and mighty works. 

Matthew 6:6 “ But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
