Paintings from God

One day I was visiting a friend’s home and she had this beautiful original painting on the wall. It was a scene of the back of a little girl in a field. Her blonde curly hair hung free to her shoulders and her thin arms were out wide skimming the tops of various brightly colored beautiful flowers. It was a breathtaking painting. I asked her who the artist was.

She replied. “God.”

God? I was confused. She began to explain. “Years ago when my children were little I had a very vivid dream. It was the exact vision you see here in this painting. When I woke up I felt in my spirit that dream was from God so I asked him to reveal the meaning of the dream to me. He did. He told me that at that time when I had three young children I was more preoccupied with cleaning my house and other things that didn’t matter, that in that season I was only “Skimming the top” of everything God had given me in that beautiful season.  I immediately began to cherish that season as God had intended. It was such a beautiful message from him to focus on what truly matters.  Then years later, I was leading a small group for college aged girls and one of them was an artist. This one girl showed up one day and said, “You might think this is weird but God told me to paint this painting for you. And it was the exact vision God had shown me in my dream! I hadn’t told her about it. GOD did!”

I was flabbergasted and in complete awe! How God loves us so completely and could use art to show his love blew me away.

I began to dig in and research and read about this new art from God. I found out that it is called Prophetic art. It is lead by the Holy Spirit. The artist will pray and paint. Although it is not always painting- it can be through song or any other creative outlet. But pointing to painting, God will lead the art to their new homes, to the people He has already selected for the paintings before they have even been painted. Sometimes the artists know in advance exactly what to paint and for whom. Other times they find out later. Prophetic art can carry a multitude of God’s goodness. It can evoke joy, peace, surrender, promises, truth, healing and deliverance to the viewer.

After learning about prophetic art, I began to pray that  God would paint a piece of prophetic art for me. One day I got a small package in the mail. An artist I had met at a retreat, who I only sat by for a few hours as we painted in silence had called me the week before and asked for my address. In the mail that day was a sweet painting of a yellow butterfly, a very significant thing in my life that the artist did not know about, but God did.

In the journey of digging in to prophetic art God has put some extremely talented and anointed Holy Spirit led prophetic artists in my path that I have learned from, such as Sara Thurman and Tammy Jensen.

And just recently after four years of learning God’s word and creating, journaling and painting God has reawakened the creativity that he placed in me before I was born. I am in awe of all that He has done through me and the art.

Remember nothing is impossible with God.

You were born to create. You too can become a prophetic artist and paint with God.

But no matter what you choose to do,

I believe God has a painting just for you.
